Daily Hive: BC’s getting a new way to recognize land by paying “rent” to Indigenous communities

2021-12-07T10:58:17-08:00
Thanks to Daily Hive Vancouver for this great piece!
“Following Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the conversation around decolonization continues across the country. An organization in BC is taking it one step further by proposing reciprocity payments as a way to continue to decolonize. It’s almost like paying rent to the Indigenous communities, whose land settlers are living and working on.” writes Sarah Anderson.

Fernwood NRG: Orange shirts, reciprocity, and decolonizing our backyards

2021-12-07T10:54:14-08:00
“The same system that put Indigenous kids into residential schools took Indigenous land and divided it up into thousands of little private lots that make up Victoria today. Orange shirts and words of acknowledgement are good, but shouldn’t we do something about our own backyards?” ~ Craig Candler

Georgia Straight Article: David Suzuki: Reparation, land, and justice for Indigenous Peoples is long overdue

2021-12-07T10:53:37-08:00
Our deep thanks to the one and only David Suzuki for featuring us in his latest article.
“One recent initiative on southern Vancouver Island aims to start decolonizing by creating a forum for businesses and homeowners to make voluntary payments—equal to one percent of private property taxes a month—to the First Nations whose traditional territories they’re in. The Reciprocity initiative is about creating a way to connect people, return wealth, and make territorial recognition tangible. It aims to change the culture of private property and the way people think about home, in Canada and beyond.” See link below:

Vancouver Sun Article: Reciprocity is a means of reconciliation in action, B.C. anthropologist says

2021-12-07T10:48:15-08:00
Our thanks to the The Vancouver Sun for this story on Reciprocity Trusts!
“When Craig Candler purchased a home in the Esquimalt area in 2004, he wanted to find a way to recognize, and honour, the Indigenous land he would be raising his family on.
Now he wants to put recognition into action through Reciprocity Trusts, a new social enterprise that offers renters and homeowners on Vancouver Island a chance to make voluntary, tax-deductible payments to a trust, that will distribute the funds to participating local Indigenous Nations. Participating Nations will make their own decisions on how the funds will be allocated, and will report back annually, said Candler.”
